Recipe of turning stories into great games
Inspiration
Blending reality and fantasy to share our stories with the world
To create this game, we drew inspiration from our friends, positive experiences, and lessons learned. Combining real stories with new possibilities allows us to make authentic connections with others. As human beings, we’re hardwired for storytelling, and transforming our experiences into a game means we get to share stories in a more interactive way!
Brainstorm
Draw an outline of our story and the character who will tell it
Next, we use our inspiration to brainstorm the game mechanics, loosely defining the story outline, key events, and main character. Just like many other classic stories, this game features a hero and a journey to embark upon. Throughout the video game design process, we utilize the foundations of great storytelling by giving our hero a purpose and an environment where she can pursue her goals.
Initial Design
Connecting the dots and defining how each part works together
Once our outline is finalized, we then begin the process of converting our hero’s mission into a Game Design Document (GDD), which brings all the different pieces together into a playable experience before the game is rendered digitally. Additionally, we utilize several techniques to validate our game mechanics. All of this works together to create the blueprint we use as a guide for prototyping. This is an exciting step of the process because a blueprint is a beacon of hope that our story will soon see the light of day!
Prototype
Inviting our hero to her new home in the digital world
As we implement the prototype, we see our hero get comfortable in her new virtual habitat. Although living inside a computer was hard for her initially, she eventually gained her footing with some love and care from us. Prototyping gives us a clear vision of all moving parts and ensures that the game will offer a fantastic player experience. Most importantly, a successful prototype gives us the green light to continue game development
Practice Makes Perfect
Learning from the past and deciding how we move forward
In this case, we came to terms with the fact that our prototype wasn’t delivering the player experience we wanted, leading us to work through several iterations. And even though we dedicated so much time to it, the possibility of canceling the project remained. It’s important to be aware when things aren’t working, in which case, we redirect or say our goodbyes, despite how hard it may be. If we decide to cancel a project, the Clan gathers for a postmortem session, which helps us learn from our mistakes and better the development process for the next hero.
Art and Sound
Shaping our hero’s character and painting the world she will live in
Thankfully, there was no need to say goodbye to our beloved hero and her blossoming story. At this point, we’ve been through a lot with her and have gathered valuable information, which helps us create detailed sketches and bring her personality to life. With her character profile as the central point of reference, we tailor other details of the game to align with our initial inspiration and storyline. Concept art and sound come into play to fully cultivate this fantasy world!
Roadmap
Solidifying the future of our hero and ensuring her story continues
As we celebrate our progress, we also are aware of where improvement is needed. Bringing our hero to life was a rollercoaster ride, but we thoroughly enjoyed the process! With a clear vision of where we need to go, we made a roadmap to ensure our hero is taken care of until she becomes the best version of herself. For now though, she is alive, and her story is waiting to be told. We can’t wait to share more exciting updates. Be sure to check out our dev blog for the latest developments!
